Tweet My PC

Last week a new Twitter based app was released by @shobankr called Tweet My PC. This is a great app as you can Restart, Shutdown or Logoff your PC using your Twitter Account. This means that you don't even need to be in front of your computer to switch it off. Just tweet from your mobile and your PC will shut down. We can even use this app to play pranks on other people by Shutting down or restarting their PC without their knowledge. Its totally upto you, how you would use this app.

The best thing about this app it that its very small, just 382 KB. So you don't need to worry about it taking space and consuming the PC resources. When you install this app, it will appear in the system tray. You can see the Tweet My PC icon in the system tray. Just double click the icon to open it.

Tweet My PC

When you open the app, you will see a small box which asks for your Twitter id and password. Enter the id and password of the Twitter account which will be used by Tweet My PC to monitor your tweets.

When you click on Save and Close , Tweet My PC takes some time to verify your account. When the account has been verified, you can tweet Shutdown , Restart and Logoff to perform the respective action. The commands are Case Sensitive. So if you tweet shutdown or restart , then nothing will happen.

I have tried this app and I tweeted Restart. Within a minute of the tweet being published, I saw a window with 2 minute Countdown Timer asking me to save all the work I was doing as the PC was going to Shutdown.

Tweet My PC

I find this app very useful as I can control my PC even when I am not at home using my Twitter account. Now that Twitter has become very popular, many new apps based on Twitter are coming up. We can expect many more useful apps which use Twitter in the future.

Create Links That Are Not Underlined

Whenever you add any link to your blog post, you will see that the link is underlined. However some people don't like that the link is underlined and want to remove the underline.

This is possible by adding a small code in the link. Check the two links given below. The first link is the normal link which is underlined. However, the second link isn't underlined.

Remove The Blogger Navbar In A Simple Step

Friday, April 17, 2009 | View Comments

Many of the Blogger users who use the templates provided by Blogger will see a Navbar at the top of the blog. However there isn't any option to remove the Blogger Navbar.

Blogger

I don't like the Blogger Navbar as it doesn't look good, it may lead the blog visitors away from my blog and some people can also deliberately Flag my blog.

So here is the simple method to remove the Blogger Navbar:

1. Visit the Dashboard and click on Layout option of your blog

Blogger Basics

2. Now click on Edit HTML option

Blogger Basics

Now search "/* Variable definitions" in the blog template. Paste the following code just above it

#navbar-iframe {
height:0px;
visibility:hidden;
display:none;
}

remove navbar

Now click on Save Template and check your blog. The Blogger Navbar will be invisible now.

Yesterday Blogger added a new feature on the Blogger Dashboard which allows the Blogger users to publish posts using SMS or email

This feature is latest addition from Blogger Draft. It is a great feature as it allows users to post even when they are travelling or are away from the Computer. Blogger has added two options

1.
Mobile Posting
2. email Posting

To add mobile posting, click on the mobile icon which can be seen in the above image. We can post using SMS or MMS. However posting using SMS is available only in US as of now.

To add email posting, click on the email icon which can be seen in the image above. You will be then required to create a Secret email address. Whenever you send any mail to that address, it will be posted on the blog.

My Goals For Cool Tricks N Tips Dot Com : Results

Source

I had written a post in February "My Goals For Cool Tricks N Tips Dot Com " in which I had made a list of things that I wanted to achieve for this blog. I had set the deadline of 10th April to achieve all the targets. Now that 10th April is over, I am declaring the results.

I had set the following targets for this blog:

1. Get PR 3
2. Get 100 Visits per day
3. Get 200 Page Views per day
4. Get 100 RSS Subscribers
5. Enter the Alexa Top 200,000 Sites
6. Increase Posting Frequency

Here are the results:

1.
Get PR 3: Cool Tricks N Tips has got PR1. This is really disappointing for me as I had expected to get at least PR2. PR is calculated according to the backlinks and I have more than 180 backlinks, which is more than many PR 2 and 3 blogs. We don't know the exact criteria according to which we get the PR. So I will have to work harder for higher PR.

2. Get 100 Visits per day: The average visitors for this blog keeps on fluctuating and it had achieved 97 Average Visitors which is very close to the target of 100 per day.

3. Get 200 Page Views per day: Similar to the Average Visitors, the Average Page Views has been fluctuating and had received 184 Page Views. So even this is close to the target of 200 Page Views.

4. Get 100 RSS Subscribers: Till now Cool Tricks N Tips has got 62 RSS Subscribers and it is clearly short of the 100 Subscribers target. However I am happy with it as I had deliberately kept a difficult target.

5. Enter the Alexa Top 200,000 Sites: This is the best result that I have managed to achieve. I had set a target to enter the Alexa Top 200,000 Sites and currently this blog has the Alexa Rank 153,481!!! which is a great achievement as it had an Alexa Rank 561,849 when I had set the target.

6. Increase Posting Frequency: I believe that I have achieved the target to increase the posting frequency as I had published 8 posts in March which is more than the posts that I have published in any month. In fact the second highest posting frequency was in Feb which was 4 posts. Though this isn't that good but I believe that I am increasing the posting frequency.

I had set 6 targets for Cool Tricks N Tips out of which I have Achieved 2, Nearly Achieved 2 and Didn't Achieve 2. So this isn't a good performance but I put in lots of efforts and I have benefited from it as I have started to get more comments and readers for my blog.

Have you ever set any targets for your blog?? If Yes, then please share your experience with us

Poll : Which Age Group Blogs The Most?

Poll

Over the last month I had put a poll on the right sidebar "Which Age Group Blogs The Most. What's Your Age??". The main objective of the poll was to find out the age group of the bloggers who visit my blog. It is a fun way of knowing your visitors in a better way and at the same time adding some interactive features for your blog readers.

In a month the poll got 55 votes. This number is small and may not correctly tell the stats about the dominant age group which visits this blog. However as I said earlier the poll was a fun way to know the blog readers. The more important thing is that these 55 people took out some of their time to vote indicating that they were interested in this blog. So this poll indicates the age group of those bloggers who are interested in this blog and find it useful.

Without wasting much time I will announce the results. There were 5 age groups that I had made:
1. Less Than 20
2. 20-30
3. 31-40
4. 41-50
5. More Than 50

And the results are:
1. Less Than 20 (21 votes : 38%)
2. 20-30 (18 votes : 33%)
3. 31-40 (8 votes : 15%)
4. 41-50 (4 votes : 7%)
5. More Than 50 (4 votes : 7%)

The results show that most of the blog visitors are young people who are less than 20 years old. However they are followed by the 20 to 30 year age group, who have got just 3 votes less than the less than 20 years age group.

This clearly shows that more than 70% of the bloggers visiting this blog are less than 30 years old. So the poll clearly shows that most of the blog visitors are young people. The 40+ age group constitutes about 29%.

Here is the actual poll which I had used. You can still vote if you did not vote till now as I haven't set a deadline for the poll.
